Itinerary

Day 1: Discover Gillette’s History & Culture

Start your day with breakfast at a charming local café in downtown Gillette, such as Coffee Beanery. After fueling up, head to the Campbell County Rockpile Museum. Here, you can explore fascinating exhibits showcasing fossils, Native American artifacts, ranching history, the region’s energy industry, and, in 2026, a traveling art exhibition about the American Bison. The Rockpile Museum is hosting, “These Noble Brutes: Engravings of the American Bison 1614–1903.” The installation features large vintage historic engravings depicting North America’s largest land mammal and an icon of the American West. It complements the Rockpile Museum’s permanent display of bison-related historic artifacts and art until December 2026. Once ranging the Great Plains in the millions, the American Bison, or buffalo casually, population is now about 400,000 in North America. Campbell County is a special destination to connect with their story, and this exhibit is a uniquely beautiful place to start.

And don’t miss the brand-new Wyoming Cowboy Hall of Fame exhibit to really connect with Wyoming culture. The museum website also notes upcoming events that are hosted throughout the year to include in your visit. While you’re there, be sure to wander through the outdoor installations, which feature a caboose, rural schoolhouses, and other historical structures, offering a glimpse into the area’s rich history.

For lunch, enjoy a meal at a downtown Gillette restaurant, like Pizza Carrello or the Frontier Auto Museum and Cafe, if you’re still hungry for history. Spend your afternoon strolling through historic Gillette, where you can visit the AVA Community Art Center and browse unique boutiques. The downtown area beautifully blends the old and new, with modern shops and restaurants set against a backdrop of scenic Western vistas.

As evening approaches, treat yourself to dinner at one of Gillette’s local favorites. If your visit aligns with an event at CAM-PLEX, consider catching a rodeo, concert, or community gathering. CAM-PLEX is a hub for entertainment, hosting everything from Broadway productions to PRCA rodeos, making it the perfect way to cap off your day with a taste of authentic Wyoming culture

Traveler Tip: Arrive at the Rockpile Museum early to enjoy the exhibits without crowds and explore the outdoor schoolhouses and caboose at your leisure.

Day 2: Wright & the Durham Bison Ranch

Begin your morning with a scenic 30-minute drive south from Gillette to the charming town of Wright. Once there, embark on a two-hour tour of the Durham Bison Ranch, available from June through August (check out this website for tour times). This immersive experience allows you to witness the majestic herd of over 2,500 bison up close, learn about sustainable ranching practices, and browse the ranch’s gift shop for unique souvenirs. Remember learning about the shrinking herds of North America in the Rockpile Museum? Conservation efforts of ranches like this have played a role in bringing healthy bison herds back to the American West.

After the tour, enjoy lunch at a cozy local café or diner in Wright. Spend your afternoon exploring the Wright Centennial Museum, a small but informative museum that offers insight into the area’s history and its evolution into the “Energy Capital of the Nation.” The museum provides a fascinating look at the region’s transformation, from its homesteading roots to its modern-day energy industry.

As the day winds down, make your way back to Gillette. Relax and unwind with a delicious dinner at one of Wright’s local restaurants, such as Open Range Steakhouse, reflecting on the day’s adventures and the unique experiences that Campbell County has to offer.

Traveler Tip: Book your Durham Bison Ranch tour in advance. Summer tours fill up quickly, and you won’t want to miss this iconic Wyoming experience.
