Overview

Welcome to the Great Land! This journey takes you through some of Alaska’s most breathtaking landscapes. This road trip offers a perfect blend of nature, adventure, and culture, from glaciers to rivers and mountains to fjords. Get off the beaten path and explore the rugged wilderness that makes Alaska a truly unique place to travel! Embark on a week-long journey through the lesser-explored wonders of the largest state in the United States, weaving in opportunities for fishing, hiking, sea kayaking, and an enriching Alaska Native cultural experience. Journey from Anchorage, Alaska’s largest city, to America’s largest national park, Wrangell-St. Elias and conclude in the picturesque coastal town of Valdez. Wild adventures and breathtaking views await you around every bend!

Preparation

Summer in Southcentral Alaska offers cooler climates, especially at the higher-elevation parks and passes. Plan to bring a mix of warm and cold weather gear, as the average temperatures on this route can range between 75 degrees Fahrenheit at lower elevations to low 40s degrees Fahrenheit  (23 Celcius to 4 Celcius) up in the higher mountain areas. In the summer, Alaska is known as the “land of the midnight sun,” so be ready to have little darkness at night and take advantage of the full summer daylight! The best way to explore the vastness that Alaska has to offer is to rent a car or RV, so make your booking ahead of time to begin and end in Anchorage. Alaskan summers offer beautiful, lush forests and the critters that inhabit them, so be sure to bring along bug spray and bear spray!

Itinerary

Travel Alaska, Matt Hage

1 HOUR 50 MINUTES 100 MILES/1534 KM

Begin your adventure by flying into Anchorage, Alaska’s largest city. Load up on provisions and head north on the Glenn Highway (AK-1 N) towards the Matanuska Glacier and Matanuska Glacier State Recreation Area, about a two-hour drive. The 300-acre recreation area is home to the magnificent Matanuska Glacier, where you can hike around the park and see the glacier from viewing platforms or take a guided tour to explore the ice tunnels, rivers, and valleys carved out by this 27-mile-long glacier. The Matanuska Glacier is the largest glacier in the United States accessible by road, and is a great way to get acquainted with the awe-inspiring Alaskan landscape. Campsites are available for tent and RV camping in the recreation area at the end of your day of icy exploration.

1 HOUR 43 MINUTES – 101 MILES / 163 KM

Several fishing charter operators in Copper Center cater to anglers seeking unique experiences on the Klutina, Gulkana, and other tributaries of the Copper River. The summer also allows visitors to witness king salmon and sockeye salmon runs. Stop by the visitor center and the George I. Ashby Memorial Museum to learn more about the history of the Copper River Valley, Wrangell- St. Elias National Park, the history of local mining communities, and the Alaska Native Athabascan people who have called this area home for over 5,000 years.

3 HOURS, 12 MINUTES – 112 MILES / 180 KM

Embark on a scenic drive towards McCarthy, the gateway to Wrangell-St. Elias National Park. A portion of the 60-mile road is gravel, adding an adventurous element, though you’ll want to check with your rental car company in advance about taking your car down this road. Once in McCarthy, explore the historic town, visit the Kennecott Mines, and immerse yourself in the vast wilderness of the national park. McCarthy offers services for visitors to connect with guides to go on glacier treks, white water rafting tours, and wildlife explorations in the park. Enjoy a meal at the local saloon and a good night’s sleep in the local lodging before a full day of park exploration the following day.

Dedicate a full day to explore Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve. Hike through vast landscapes, marvel at gigantic glaciers, and enjoy the solitude of being in one of the least-visited and largest national parks in the United States at 13 million acres. Explore this massive preserve on foot, by boat, or from the skies, and keep an eye out for the local fauna, including caribou, Dall sheep, moose, and black and brown bears. From towering glacial peaks to lush boreal forests and open lowland tundra, this park has a wide variety of landscapes to enjoy.
