Boyce Thompson Arboretum (BTA) in Superior, Arizona, is simply stunning. Ranking as Arizona’s oldest and largest botanical garden, the arboretum is an important area for research of desert plants and ecosystems from around the globe. But there is much more to see in the town of Superior than just the arboretum. In fact, Superior was recently rated as one of the “Top 15 Small Towns to visit in the US” by Smithsonian Magazine. This historic town boasts tons of unique experiences to discover, and we recommend spending a whole weekend in the area after your visit to the arboretum.

Post Arboretum Lunch & Dinner Options
If you only have a few hours, be sure to head to Main Street for multiple lunch and dinner options in Superior. The Silverking Smokehouse and Porter’s Saloon & Grill are local favorites that can’t be missed. A visit to Bella’s Cafe, Gypsy Sisters Coffee, or Mountainside Coffee are great for those needing an afternoon caffeine boost, or breakfast before heading over to BTA.
Superior Weekend Shopping on Main Street
Superior is home to countless artists and some of the most unique stores in Arizona. Spend the afternoon hopping between art galleries and antique stores right on Main Street. The Random Boutique, Picket Post Antiques, or La Paloma Fine Art are all filled to the brim with one-of-a-kind and colorful finds. Include a stop in the Bruzzi Vineyard tasting room as you explore town.

View Superior From Above
If you think Superior is pretty from the ground, just wait until you see it with a bird’s eye view. Superior Soaring features glider plane rides that offer outstanding views of Picketpost Mountain, BTA, Queen Creek Canyon, and the countless unnamed—but equally stunning—desert mountains, washes, and cactuses in the area.
Best Hikes in The Superior Area
If you’re wanting to spend more time outside after the arboretum, you’re in luck. Superior is home to hundreds of miles of hiking trails, and is even a trail community for the famous Arizona Trail. The hike up Picketpost Mountain is a classic in the area, as is the Legends of Superior Trail (LOST). Although the entire LOST is stunning, our favorite parts are the Arnett Canyon and Queen Creek Canyon Segments.

Watch For Shooting Stars
Don’t let Superior’s close proximity to major Arizona cities fool you; the area is easy to get to, but still boasts a wild side that is perfect for those seeking a bit of adventure. A nightly show takes place with Superior’s dark skies showing off thousands of stars and views of the Milky Way over the iconic Picketpost Mountain. After star gazing, head back to the Historic Magma Hotel for a night at this incredibly restored building originally constructed in 1910. Be sure to grab breakfast at Buckboard City Cafe in the morning before exploring more of Superior.
Although many people come to Superior for the beautiful Boyce Thompson Arboretum, there is much more to add to your list during your visit to town. From unique shopping to some of the best hiking in Arizona, Superior offers a truly elevated experience of authentic southwest culture and history.
