Cool Springs – The Route 66 Welcome

Before you even reach the heart of Oatman, make sure to stop at Cool Springs, located along Route 66 just before entering town. This historic gas and service station is a perfect pit stop for photos, snacks, and a brief rest. Cool Springs offers a glimpse into the days when Route 66 was the main road to the West, and it’s a great place to stretch your legs while taking in the views of the surrounding mountains. Lore has it that locals were available at Cool Springs to help travelers drive their cars up the windy passage known as Sitegraves Pass. This is also the perfect place to capture a nostalgic shot of the Route 66 shield on the road in front of Cool Springs. There aren’t many of these left, so grab a photo before heading into the Wild West charm of Oatman itself.

A Step Back in Time with Wild West Adventures

Oatman’s Old West spirit is alive and well, with gunfights taking place daily along the downtown strip. The Oatman Ghost Rider Gunfights reenact iconic shootouts from the Wild West, offering visitors a chance to witness history firsthand. As you explore the streets, keep an eye out for the famous wild burros that wander through town. These friendly animals, descendants of pack animals once used in the mines, are a beloved sight. Be sure to try sweet-talking them for a chance to snap a great photo and treat them to some “Burrow chow” as you enjoy the town’s rustic charm.
